How to measure for a mural
A mural is printed for one wall and one wall only, so the measurements have to be right the first time. Walls are rarely square and floors are rarely level, which is why every step below asks you to measure more than once. Take fifteen minutes with a tape and a pencil, then send us the numbers and we will confirm the size to order.
Measure the width in three places
Run the tape across the wall just under the ceiling, again at mid height, and again at the floor. Write down all three. Walls bow, and the number you need is the largest of the three.
Measure the wall itself, not the furniture in front of it. Move what you can.Measure the height in three places
Measure floor to ceiling at the left edge, the centre and the right edge. Old floors settle and ceilings drop, so a difference of two inches across one wall is common. Use the tallest reading.
Measuring to the top of the baseboard instead of the floor is the most common mistake we see.Add the trim margin
A mural is never ordered at the exact size of the wall. Extra material on all four sides gives the installer room to align the panels and cut clean against the ceiling and baseboard. Allow at least 2 in / 5 cm on every side, and where a mural comes in fixed sizes, take the next size up.
Ordering the exact wall size is the one mistake that cannot be fixed on site.Record doors, windows and outlets
Measure each opening and note how far it sits from the left edge of the wall and from the floor. You still order the full wall, but the position of a window changes where the focal point of the design lands.
Check how the panels will run
Murals arrive as numbered panels that hang left to right in sequence, with the seams overlapping slightly. Knowing the panel count tells you how much room the installer needs in front of the wall to lay them out.
Photograph the wall and send it over
Stand square to the wall and take one photo that captures it floor to ceiling, corner to corner. Send it with your measurements and we will confirm the size and the number of panels before the mural goes to print.
Every mural line sizes differently. Some are printed to your exact wall, others arrive in fixed sizes that have to be trimmed on site.
